Lehigh, Nazareth product Mike Garzillo drafted by Miami Marlins

The second baseman was drafted in 2015 but came back to school and got drafted higher in 2016.

Mike Garzillo was drafted in the 38th round of the MLB draft last year by the New York Yankees.

The Nazareth grad and Lehigh second baseman made the decision to return to school, but was rewarded Saturday when he was drafted again, this time by the Miami Marlins in the 25th round with the 743rd overall pick.

Garzillo posted another strong year as a senior, earning Patriot League Player of the Year honors -- the first Mountain Hawk to do so since 2006 when Matt McBride won the award.

In his final year on South Mountain, Garzillo started all 54 games and batted .313 while topping the league in both slugging percentage (.559) and runs scored (48). He finished with 37 RBIs and nine home runs.

Garzillo always dreamed of playing for Yankees

At Nazareth, Garzillo was a two-time Express-Times All-Area first team selection.

Lafayette right-handed pitcher David Bednar was also drafted on Saturday in the 35th round (1,044th overall) by the San Diego Padres.

As a junior this season, Bednar led the Leopards with a 3.92 ERA over 59 2/3 innings, tossing five complete games while striking out 70 and holding opposing batters to a .241 average. Bednar has 188 career strikeouts, moving him into third place all-time in program history.

East Stroudsburg University also had a pair of draft picks this weekend in RHP Matt Festa (7th round, Seattle) and outfielder Robert Bennie (24th round, Oakland), a Stroudsburg grad.
