The Blue Eagles trailed Northampton 10-0 in the final.
Nazareth girls basketball team was down 10-0 in the early going of its SportsFest A'Town Throwdown final against Northampton on Sunday night at Cedar Beach in Allentown.
But just as you might expect from back-to-back District 11 Class AAAA champions, the Blue Eagles didn't panic.
They stayed strong and soon tied the game 10-10.
Then after trailing by one point at halftime, Nazareth soon took control of the second half to secure a 57-48 victory and its second SportsFest title in three seasons.
"We just told them to keep playing," Nazareth coach Rich Bickert said. "We were behind 10-0 to start the game and I thought, 'oh, we're liable to pack it in.' But then we hit a couple shots that got us in the flow again. We played better defense the second half. Did what we had to do. And different people hit shots and that's what really turned it around."
"We were down at halftime. We had our stern halftime talk about getting the open person, making the right cuts and I think that really helped us. We really come together as a team in situations like that. I think that's what makes us such a good team," rising senior Jess Durnin said.
Rising senior Tessa Brugler, who has verbally committed to Bucknell University, scored 17 points to lead the way and win the MVP.
"I think we played really well," Brugler said. "We had some young girls step up and take charge. I think that leading into the season is a great preview of how the season is going to go."
Durnin, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 12 points for the Blue Eagles.
Sophomore Morgan Amy tallied three 3-pointers for nine points. Emily Parker and Grace Stevens each scored six points for Nazareth, which beat Shamokin, Bethlehem Catholic and Central Dauphin East on Sunday to reach the final.
Aja Blount, who was on the all-tournament team, scored 23 points to lead Northampton.
Konkrete Kids' Victoria Keenan had 12 points.
Jade Rindock added six points for Northampton, which beat Freedom, Notre Dame and Allen on Sunday to reach the finals.
For Nazareth, it was another summer championship as it won the Holy Family tournament in June.
"We did this a couple years back. We won Holy Family and we won this and we had a good winter season," Bickert said. "It doesn't always transfer over. It was good for us because we have to fit a lot of pieces together from last year."
