Scherr was the 4th male golfer in District 11 history to win a state title.
Youngstown State University golf coach Tony Joy drove four hours last October from Youngstown, Ohio, to York, Pennsylvania, to see Nazareth senior Kevin Scherr compete in the PIAA Class 3A golf championships.
Now, coach Joy will watch Scherr play golf the next four years as a member of the Penguins' golf program.
In a signing ceremony held Wednesday afternoon at the Bethlehem Golf Club clubhouse, the 17-year-old Scherr accepted a partial golf scholarship offer to attend Youngstown State University and play Division I golf.
Scherr capped off a banner senior season last fall by becoming only the fourth male golfer in District 11 history to win a state title.
Scherr, the son of Charlie and Trish Scherr, also won the 2016 District 11 Class 3A boys championship, Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament and Lehigh Valley Tournament of Champions.
Scherr led Nazareth to its best golf season in school history.
The Blue Eagles finished second in the 2016 PIAA Class 3A Team Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, won the EPC regular season, EPC tournament, District 11 Class 3A and PIAA Class 3A East Subregional titles and registered an undefeated 16-0 record.
Paul Viola, the Bethlehem Golf Club Director of Golf, has worked with Scherr the past two years.
Viola lauded Scherr's competitive nature and work ethic.
"Kevin wants to compete and knows how to compete," Viola said. "The reason he got to the level he is at was because he wanted to compete. He started out on the local junior tour, and then played national junior events. He got himself comfortable playing competitive golf at the highest level."
"His work ethic is second to none," Viola added. "He practices the right way, and he is focused on what he is doing. He had a goal in mind for what he wanted to do, we had a plan to get there, and he followed it."
Scherr, who plans to study accounting, said he chose Youngstown for a variety of reasons.
"Youngstown State had everything I was looking for," said Scherr, the 2015 and 2016 Lehigh Valley Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year. "A nice coach who was interested in me, a golf program with an opportunity to play and excel, great practice facilities with indoor on campus and outdoor off campus hitting and putting areas, new apartment housing next to campus, admission into the Williams College of Business, and academic and aid awards. The YSU campus is mid-size, with about 15,000 students and nice amenities."
The dedication by coach Joy to travel to watch him play impressed Scherr.
"Coach Joy showed the most interest in me," Scherr said. "On the second day of the PIAA state championship, he drove from Youngstown, Ohio, to watch me play and win the individual championship and finish second in the team championship. During my visit to YSU, Coach Joy was very kind, accommodating and easy to talk to. I saw potential for the YSU golf team with Coach Joy's recent recruits: me, the other two incoming freshman and a redshirt freshman."
To prepare for the jump up to NCAA Division I competition, Scherr plans to play a busy summer schedule of Pennsylvania Golf Association, Golf Association of Philadelphia, Golf Association of the Lehigh Valley and Lehigh Valley Junior Golf tour tournaments.
"I plan to improve my putting and short game, while continuing to play junior and amateur tournaments this summer to prepare for YSU team tryouts and college tournament competition," Scherr said.
